7 Mistakes Couples Make When Planning Their Wedding

(and how to avoid them — starting with mistake #1!)

Planning your wedding is such an exciting season — but it can also be overwhelming with all the moving parts, decisions, and details that go into creating your dream day. After planning and coordinating hundreds of weddings, I’ve seen it all — the good, the stressful, and the “wish we’d known that sooner!” moments.

So today, I’m sharing the 7 biggest mistakes couples make when planning their wedding — and how to make sure you don’t fall into the same traps!

1) Not hiring a professional MASTER CERTIFIED wedding planner (hi, that’s me!)

This is hands down the biggest mistake I see couples make. You might think you can handle it all on your own, but trust me — wedding planning is a full-time job. From managing vendors, building timelines, tracking budgets, and troubleshooting last-minute hiccups, a Master Certified planner will save you time, stress, and money in the long run.

At My Event Buddee, my goal is to make sure you can actually enjoy your engagement and be a guest at your own wedding — not the one running it. Whether you need full-service planning or month-of coordination with design help, I’m here to make sure no detail is overlooked.

2) Not setting (or sticking to) a realistic budget

Pinterest boards can make every couple dream big — but it’s easy to lose track of costs without a clear plan. One of the first things I do with my couples is walk through their priorities and help allocate funds accordingly. That way, you can splurge where it matters and save where it doesn’t, without surprises later on.

I can’t tell you how many times couples have looked back and said, “Ugh, I wish I hadn’t spent money on that — I should’ve put it toward something else!” Setting a clear, realistic budget from the start helps you avoid those regrets.

3) Booking vendors before choosing your planner

I know it’s tempting to start booking vendors right away, but your planner can actually help you make those decisions strategically. We know which vendors fit your budget, your style, and your venue’s logistics — and we often have relationships that can save you money or stress.

Hire your planner first, and we’ll guide you to the right team from the start! I have so many wonderful vendor connections that often offer deals or extra perks for my couples. Sometimes, couples book vendors too early and later realize they don’t align with their vision or budget — and by then, it’s too late to change. A planner helps you avoid that entirely.

4) Underestimating the timeline

Wedding days fly by — and every minute matters. One of the biggest mistakes couples make is not building in enough buffer time for things like hair and makeup, travel, and photos.

I create detailed, minute-by-minute timelines to keep everyone (and everything!) running smoothly so you can actually relax and enjoy your day. Having a timeline for your wedding party, family, and vendors is absolutely key!

5) Taking on too many DIY projects

I love a good personal touch, but there’s a fine line between “fun and crafty” and “why did we think this was a good idea?” The week before your wedding is not the time to be assembling centerpieces or printing place cards.

Let your planner (or our design team!) handle the setup so you can focus on celebrating. Too much DIY can actually cost you more than renting or utilizing your planner’s décor — and anyone who hires My Event Buddee for design services gets access to our rentals for free!

6) Forgetting about the guest experience

From confusing signage to long wait times at the bar, small details can make a big impact on your guests’ experience. I always help couples think through the flow of the day — from arrival to send-off — to make sure it’s seamless, comfortable, and enjoyable for everyone.

The guest experience is what everyone remembers. Spending that extra time ensuring your guests have an amazing experience means you’ll have the best time, too.

7) Not soaking in the moment

At the end of the day, your wedding isn’t just about the details — it’s about the feeling. The laughter, the happy tears, the moment you finally say “I do.” Don’t let stress steal those memories from you.

Hire the help you need, trust your team, and truly be present. Thinking ahead with your planner (like me!) ensures your day is about you — and that you can soak in every single moment instead of worrying about the little things you can’t control.
